NERDC’s Research & Development

The National Engineering Research & Development Centre (NERDC) of Sri Lanka conducts applied engineering research to develop innovative, practical, and sustainable technologies that address national needs. Through multidisciplinary research, prototype development, pilot-scale demonstrations, and technology commercialization, NERDC bridges the gap between research and industry.

NERDC's R&D activities cover a wide range of disciplines, including civil engineering, renewable energy, environmental engineering, mechatronics, agricultural engineering, mechanical engineering, food processing, electrical and electronics engineering, and advanced manufacturing. Working closely with government agencies, industries, universities, and international partners, NERDC develops indigenous technologies that enhance productivity, promote sustainable development, and support Sri Lanka's industrial and economic growth.

NERDC's R&D in Civil Engineering

NERDC conducts research and develops innovative technologies in civil engineering to support sustainable infrastructure development. Its R&D activities include cost effective building construction technology, building materials, structural engineering, and green building technologies, providing practical solutions for the construction industry and public sector.

NERDC's R&D in Mechanical Engineering

NERDC undertakes research in mechanical engineering to develop efficient and cost-effective technologies for industrial and agricultural, ayurvedic applications and food processing, automotive. Research areas include machine design, manufacturing technologies, food processing equipment, energy-efficient machinery, product development, and prototype fabrication to enhance industrial productivity and local innovation.

NERDC's R&D in Electrical & Electronics Engineering

NERDC carries out research in electrical and electronics engineering to develop advanced technologies for power systems, renewable energy integration, electrical equipment, instrumentation, and industrial electronics. The Centre also focuses on testing, performance evaluation, and the development of innovative electrical and electronic solutions to meet emerging industrial needs.

NERDC's R&D in Mechatronics Engineering

NERDC's research in mechatronics integrates mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering to develop automated systems. Its R&D activities include industrial automation, control systems, smart manufacturing, and process automation, enabling industries to improve productivity, efficiency, and technological competitiveness.
